Polar bear in overalls

nyph1.jpg

(Mönster till Isbjörnen på svenska finns här)

This is my polar bear in overalls. I really like this color-combo, he is like a popsicle!

The pattern is similar to my pattern Spring Bunny. This one isn’t as difficult though, it has less details and less color changes. Just as for the Spring Bunny the body, arms and legs are made in one piece.

The height is about 30 cm/12 inches.

Here’s a picture of the back:

The yarn I used is Drops Safran in light pink and light icy blue, with petrol blue for the nose. The yarn gives 160 m/ 50 g. That’s 175 yds/1.8 oz. I used a 2,5 mm hook, (between B-1 and C-2 in US sizes). 1 skein (50 g) of each color was enough.

You can sew eyes as I have done or attach safety eyes from the store.

ROW 10: 1 sc in the next 8 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. 60 st)

Now we´re making the stomach, we’ll leave the arms for now.
The body (stomach) is made of 30 stitches. The arms are made of 15 stitches each. In total 60 st.

ROW 11: 1 sc in the next 7 sc. Skip the next 15 sc (the first arm). 1 sc in the next 15 sc. Skip the next 15 sc (the second arm). 1 sc in the next 8 sc. (30 st)
ROW 12-16: 1 sc in every sc. (30 st)
ROW 17: Change to pink yarn. 1 sc in every sc. (30 st)
ROW 18-20: 1 sc in every sc. (30 st
)

Legs:
We’re now making the legs, first off is the gap between the legs. Flatten the body and count 12 stitches on the left side and 12 stitches on the right. This will be the left and right leg. Leftover is 3 stitches in the middle of the front, and 3 stitches in the middle of the back. These will be the gap between the legs.

ROW 1: Crochet with sc until you get to the first stitch of the ”gap” in the back of the body. 1 sc in the next 3 sc. Turn.
ROW 2-3: Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 3 sc. Turn.

Stuff the body and sew the “flap” you have made to the 4 “gap” stitches in the front. (See picture from the pattern for Spring Bunny).

We’re now making the right leg. Stuff the leg as you go. Each leg is made of 15 st.
ROW 1: Start with new thread (pink) in the first stitch after the gap, in the back. Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 11 sc. Crochet 3 sc into the side of the “gap”. (15 st)
ROW 2: 1 sc in the first ch. 1 sc in the next 14 sc. (15 st)
ROW 3-16: 1 sc in every sc. (15 st)
ROW 17: Change to blue yarn. 1 sc in every sc. (15 st)
ROW 18-23: 1 sc in every sc. (15 st)
ROW 24: 1 sc in the next 13 sc, 2 sc together. (14 st)
ROW 25: 2 sc together, repeat. (7 st) End with sl st. Make sure the leg is stuffed enough and sew the opening closed.

The left leg is made the same way as the right, but instead of starting in the first stitch after the “gap” you start in the last stitch before the “gap” in the back of the body.

Arm:
Both arms are made the same way.
Go back to row 11 of the body and the stitches you skipped. Start with blue yarn in one of the stitches in the back of the body. Stuff as you go.
ROW 1: Ch 1, 2 sc together. 1 sc in the next 12 sc. (14 st) You will get an opening under the arm, sew it closed with the yarn you started with.
ROW 2: 1 sc in the first ch, 1 sc in the next 6 sc, 2 sc together, 1 sc in the next 5 sc. (13 st)
ROW 3-13: 1 sc in every sc. (13 st)
ROW 14: 1 sc in the next sc. Crochet 2 sc together 6 times. (7 st) End with a sl st, make sure the arm is stuffed enough and sew the opening closed.

Tail:
ROW 1: (With blue yarn) 6 sc in a magic ring.
ROW 2: 2 sc in every sc. (12 st)
ROW 3-4: 1 sc in every sc. (12 st)
End with a sl st and fasten off. Stuff the tail and sew it to the body in the back, just below where the pants starts.

Front flap of the overalls:
Go to row 17 of the body. Count 10 stitches in the center of the stomach and crochet into them (see picture above).
ROW 1: Start with new (pink) yarn in the first of the 10 stitches. Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 9 sc. Turn. (10 st)
ROW 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the next 9 sc, 1 sc in the first ch of the previous row. Turn. (10 st)
ROW 3-11: Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 10 sc. Turn. (10 st
)

We’re now making the first strap/suspender. Make a sl st in the same st. Crochet ch 30. (Make sure the strap is long enough to go over the shoulder and all the way down to the pants in the back. Make a couple of more ch if the strap is too short.) Turn. Crochet 1 sl st in each of the ch. End with a sl st to the first st. Fasten off.
Crochet the other strap by starting with new thread in the other corner of the front flap. Repeat the instructions above.

Ears (make 2):
ROW 1: With blue yarn. 6 sc in a magic ring.
ROW 2: 2 sc in every sc. (12 st)
ROW 3: 1 sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc, repeat. (18 st)
ROW 4-6: 1 sc in every sc. (18 st)
End with a sl st and fasten off. Flatten the ear, stuff it just a little bit. Fold it a little to make it bowl-shaped and sew it to the head.

Assembly:
Sew nose and eyes after the ears are sewn to the head. Stuff the head, make sure it’s stuffed enough especially in the neck. Sew the head to the body. Cross the straps in the back and sew them to the pants. (See picture of the back.)

Abbreviations
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
