Coffee break pillow

I combined my love for crocheting and baking when I designed this pillow!
The pillow is made out of solid granny squares with cinamon buns and cakes. The green cake is called ”princess cake” – a swedish dessert traditionally made with jam, whipped cream and marzipan. This is one of the most popular cakes in Sweden and in Åland where I live as well.
(If you want to make a mini version of a princess cake I have the pattern here!)

The pattern consists of two different crochet squares and you will need nine squares in total for the front of a pillow. You will also need a throw pillow made of fabric the same size as the crocheted front. I sewed my own from beige fabric. Then I sewed the finished crocheted square on top of my pillow with sewing thread.

Use row 10 of both squares to crochet the squares together as you go. (Or you can sew the squares together when you’re finished with them.) The squares need blocking to be equal in size and get the right shape.
I used yarn that gives 100 m/50 g (= 109 yds/1,8 oz) and a 3,5 mm hook and my pillow measures 37 cm x 37 cm (14,6″).
You’ll need these yarn colors: pink, green, white, beige/light brown and dark brown. 100 g of the pink yarn and less than 50 g of the other yarn colors is needed.
The pattern is in american english.

If you make the squares and post pictures, please tag me, I would love to see them!

Square with cinnamon bun
The cinamon bun is crocheted in a spiral in the back loops only. Don’t cut off the yarn when you change to the beige color at the start of row 2, you will continue crocheting with the brown yarn when you get to row 3. The same applies to each row of the cinnamon bun.
The pink part of the square is crocheted with closed rows.

With brown yarn. 6 sc in a magic ring, pull to close the ring. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (I used a metal paper clip.) (6 st)
ROW 2: Crochet ch 1 with beige yarn in the back loop of the first sc of the previous row (see picture 1. above). 1 sc in the same back loop. 2 sc in the back loop of next 5 sc. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (12 st)
ROW 3: Insert the hook in the loop you left behind at row 1, continue crocheting with brown yarn. 1 sc in the back loop of the first ch of the previous row (see picture 2). 2 sc in the back loop of the next sc. *1 sc in the back loop of the next sc, 2 sc in the back loop of the next sc.* Repeat *-* 5 times in total. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (18 st)
ROW 4: Insert the hook in the loop you left behind at row 2, continue crocheting with beige yarn (see picture 3.). *1 sc in the back loop of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the back loop of the next sc.* Repeat *-* 6 times in total. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (24 st)
ROW 5: Insert the hook in the loop you left behind at row 3, continue crocheting with brown yarn. *1 sc in the back loop of the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the back loop of the next sc.* Repeat *-* 6 times in total. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (30 st)
ROW 6: Insert the hook in the loop you left behind at row 4, continue crocheting with beige yarn. *1 sc in the back loop of the next 4 sc, 2 sc in the back loop of the next sc.* Repeat *-* 6 times in total. Take the crochet hook out of the loop and attach a stitch marker to the loop. (36 st)
Insert the hook in the (brown) loop you left behind at row 5, crochet 1 sl st in the back loop of the next st, fasten off. (See picture 4.)

Insert the hook in the (beige) loop you left behind at row 6. Crochet a sl st in the back loop of the next (brown) st and then a sl st in the back loop of the next (beige) st. (See pictures above.) Fasten off.

ROW 7: Start with new pink yarn in the back loop of next st and crochet ch 1 (see picture 1. above). Crochet 1 sl st in the back loop of the next 35 st. 1 sl st in the back loop of the first ch of the row. See picture 2. Make sure you’re not crocheting this row too tightly. (36 st)

ROW 8: Ch 1 (counts as first sc). 1 sc in the back loop of the next 2 sl st. 1 hdc in the back loop of the next sl st. *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in the back loop of the next sl st. 1 hdc in the back loop of the next sl st. 1 sc in the back loop of the next 6 sl st. 1 hdc in the back loop of the next sl st.* Repeat *-* 3 times in total. (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in the back loop of the next sl st. 1 hdc in the back loop of the next sl st. 1 sc in the back loop of the next 3 sl st. 1 sl st to the first ch of the row (see picture 1. above). (56 st = 24 sc + 8 hdc + 16 dc + ch 8)
ROW 9: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). 1 dc in the next 5 st. *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in the next ch-space. 1 sc in the next 12 st.* Repeat *-* 3 times in total. (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in the next ch-space, 1 dc in the next 6 st. Sl st to the third ch of the row (see picture 2.). Fasten off. (72 st = 64 dc + ch 8)
ROW 10: Start with new white thread in the next st and crochet ch 1 (counts as first sc). 1 sc in the next 6 dc. *(1 sc + ch 2 + 1 sc) in the next ch-space. 1 sc in the next 16 dc.* Repeat *-* 3 times in total. (1 sc + ch 2 + 1 sc) in the next ch-space. 1 sc in the next 9 dc. 1 sl st in the first ch of the row. Fasten off. (80 st = 72 sc + ch 8)

Square with princess cake
The green circle is crocheted in a spiral, the rest of the square is crocheted with closed rows.

ROW 1: With green yarn. 6 sc in a magic ring. (6 st)
ROW 2: 2 sc in every sc. (12 st)
ROW 3: 1 sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (18 st)

ROW 6: Ch 1. 1 sl st in the back loop of next 29 st. 1 sl st in the back loop of the first ch of the row. (See the left picture above.)  Make sure you’re not crocheting this row too tightly. (30 st)
Don’t cut off the yarn, you will continue crocheting with the white yarn when you get to the ”cake paper”. Attach a stitch marker to the loop to make it stay in place.
ROW 6: Start with new pink yarn. Ch 1 (counts as first sc) in the back loop of the same first ch of the previous row.
